Kitui Rain

about

Kitui Rain is about the sound of the rain and the magical moment when the rains arrived and ended a three year drought in Kitui, Kenya, one of my favorite places. I have a non-profit tree-planting organization there called Singing Tree and in October, 2022, we planted trees and sang and danced together before the rains came.

The rains arrived in a much anticipated fanfare. Clouds rolled down the valley and swirled around dropping a few drops, a few more and and then suddenly a torrent that drowned out everything but the sound of water hammering tin roofs. Villagers found themselves in mud to their knees and school pathways became rivers. Even the sound of children laughing was drowned out and we had to yell to be heard. The frogs came out and serenaded us!

Then the rains stopped. All was silent except for the odd drip. Then a few more drops would be released from the clouds changing shape and moving along. The sky would turn from lavender, to gold, to grey. The rain was like a personality whispering, talking, shouting, singing, praying silently, drenching one family then moving down the lane to drench another family in a neighboring farm.

The rain came and went like a conversation until at last, the clouds pushed down the valley and in a violet swirl, were gone.
